In the second installment of this column, various methods of presenting chemical images on a WWW site were described, including ways to depict molecular animation (e.g., vibrations and reactions) using MDL's Chemscape Chime and concatenated XYZ structure files. Aside from Chime, there are several other ways to present animated movies on the WWW, including Java and JavaScript, Macromedia's Shockwave, and by embedding animation files such as Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG), Video for Windows (AVI), or Apple's QuickTime (QT or MOV). A simpler method of presenting animations, which does not require special software helpers or plug-ins for viewing, is through the use of animated GIF images.
