Abstract. A simple experiment that incorporates 31P-NMR in the traditional organic laboratory has been developed. The student will get exposure in using 31P-NMR to follow the progress of a nucleophilic substitution reaction. The student will have the opportunity to apply the principles of chemical shifts and coupling patterns to identify reactants and products.
