Abstract. Muscimol is an isoxazole alkaloid isolated from the iconic mushroom Amanita muscaria. Although relatively small in size, muscimol has attracted great attention in the neurochemistry area based on its affinity for the GABAA receptor and its biological activity. The review relates the numerous synthetic approaches which have been designed to synthesize muscimol and also provided guidance to prepare valuable muscimol analogues.
